Pre-Call Context reuses what the platform already learned on a callerтАЩs earlier calls. When it is on and the caller matches an earlier finished call of the same agent, the platform seeds previous_call_* variables before the prompt renders, so the greeting and the prompt can pick up where things left off. It is off by default, and the default configuration adds no latency to the call.

How it works

  1. When a call ends, post-call analysis writes a continuation brief onto the run: the call summary, the flow node it left off on, and the open items (next steps) it found.
  2. When the next call connects, one indexed read finds that callerтАЩs recent finished calls for this agent, within your organization and within the lookback window. Purged calls never resurface.
  3. The variables below are seeded from the most recent call (and every carried call is available as {{previous_calls}}). A value you supply for the current call always wins.
  4. If nothing matches, or the lookup fails, is_returning_caller is false and the call starts fresh.

Configuration

Open the agentтАЩs Pre-Call Context panel (a card in the conversational editor, a modal in the single-prompt editor), or set the pre_call_context block on workflow_configurations through the agent API.

Variables the prompt can use

Testing from the editor

A test call from the editor has no telephone leg to identify the caller, so add a phone_number Test Input (the number you want to be recognised as). The editor, the embed widget and the text-chat tester all match on it, and stamp the contact so contact_id matching finds those runs too. On a real call the dialled or calling number is used.

Privacy and limits

Every lookup is scoped to your organization and to the same agent. A purged call is never reused. The LLM brief does not surface personal details unless they are essential to continue. Matching on a phone number cannot tell two people sharing a line apart; use contact_id matching where you maintain contacts, and keep prompts from reading earlier details out unprompted.
